Romain Gauthier Insight Micro-Rotor Lady.

As far as contemporary independent haute horlogerie ateliers go, Romain Gauthier is certainly one of the most exciting. The pieces produced in that manufacture are riveting, intriguing and enticing. Each piece is meticulously produced by hand and each has an enormous amount of craftsmanship and mechanical mastery embedded into it. The Insight Micro-Rotor Lady is Romain Gauthier’s first venture into the woman’s watch market, and it is spectacular.

The Insight Micro-Rotor Lady’s case sits at 39.5mm in diameter and 12.9mm in thickness and as made up of 18k red gold. The dimensions of Romain Gauthier’s very first lady’s timepiece is actually quite large, but in doing so you have the upmost ability to see the dial’s magnificence in a completely uninterrupted manner. The dial is available in two colour palettes. You either have a Tahitian mother-of-pearl option, or an Australian extra-white mother-of-pearl option. Both are really quite beautiful, but if I had to choose a piece for my better half, it would definitely be the darker Tahitian mother-of-pearl variant.

At 12 o’clock you have a sub-dial depicting the passing hours and minutes with either the Tahitian mother-of-pearl or the Australian mother-of-pearl dial. The hour numerals are beautifully italicized, and the hands are elegantly shaped and openworked. The subsidiary dial in the centre of the watch displays the passing seconds, again with either mother-of-pearl dial option, and the exposed balance wheel sits at 6 o’clock. In the southern hemisphere of the piece you again have either mother-of-pearl variation, and then at 9 o’clock you have the bi-directional 22k gold micro-rotor that has been sprinkled with diamonds. The bridges feature a gorgeous horizontally brushed pattern, and the crown placed at an unconventional 2 o’clock finishes off a very attractive ensemble.

The Insight Micro-Rotor Lady is powered by Romain Gauthier’s in-house manufactured micro-rotor movement that beats at a typical 4Hz, has a power reserve of 80-hours and of course incorporates the passing hours, minutes and seconds. This is an amazingly well finished movement that really pays tribute to just how capable Romain Gauthier is as a watchmaker.

This is certainly one of the most interesting mechanical timepieces made specifically for the ladies’ watch market right now. It represents Romain Gauthier’s ability to produce, on multiple levels, wonderfully complex, classic and elegant timepieces that really are second to none. Each model variant will be available in a limited run of only 10-pieces, and each piece will cost 83,000CHF. The Insight Micro-Rotor Lady is a delicate timepiece that appeals to me greatly both from an aesthetic and a technical stand-point. Exquisite watchmaking.
