In the world of haute horlogerie, the atelier of Richard Mille reigns supreme. There is little out there that can compare to the ingenuity, creativity, craftsmanship and of course absurdness of the pieces developed by Richard Mille. The amount of hype and demand surrounding every single one of his creations is huge right now, and while a lot of the attention is on his more rectangular-based collections, his circular creations are some of the world’s finest. Especially so is the very underrated RM 028, a brilliant diver’s piece that has the look and the feel of a standard Richard Mille piece in a more conventional case shape.
The RM 028’s tripartite case sits at a fairly large 47mm in diameter and has a depth rating of 300m. This very deep water-resistant rating is achieved with thanks to its unique case design, which incorporates torque screws that can be individually tensioned around the circumference of the case. The unidirectional bezel further accentuates the RM 028’s durable nature, built with three layers connected by 22 screws. The sapphire crystal covering the beautiful and ultra-contemporary dial is 0.40mm thick and features an anti-glare treatment on both sides, enhancing visibility in and out of the water.
The dial features a semi-instantaneous date display place in a vertical aperture at the 7 o’clock position rimmed in red, which contrast perfectly with the extra red-dial highlights against the monochromatic colour scheme of the main dial’s contrasting blacks and greys. The broad hour and minute hands and elongated seconds hand are extremely legible even against what looks to be a very busy dial-backdrop.
The RM 028 is powered by Richard Mille’s calibre RMAS7, a robust automatic mechanism that features the passing hours, minutes and seconds, as well as the passing date and adjustable rotor geometry. What does that mean exactly? Well, it basically allows the rewinding of the mainspring to be adapted to the user’s activity level, depending on what they’re doing. This is achieved by adjusting the six positional settings, either speeding up or slowing down the winding process.
The RM 028 may be Richard Mille’s most unconventional creation, but it definitely is one of the most interesting, and one of the most underrated, both from an aesthetic and a technical perspective. This is a very masculine timepiece, very aggressive and very outspoken. Not the kind of low-key watch you’d wear with a suit and tie, but definitely one you can wear confidently in virtually any other situation. One of Richard Mille’s finest, ladies and gentlemen, the RM 028.
