Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra-Thin Automatique.

The battle for the reigning title of the best wearable ultra-thin timepiece wages on, and within that domain Bulgari’s dominance continues on with their Octo Finissimo collection. Here is the Octo Finissimo Ultra-Thin Automatique, a superb and ultra-luxe super-thin timepiece that exudes elegance, wearability and of course drop-dead gorgeous good looks.

At 40mm in diameter and a paper-thin 5.15mm, the Octo Finissimo Ultra-Thin Automatique’s very small profile may seem somewhat lackluster with respect to its dimensions, but with thanks to its brash and super-sharp architecture, the Octo Finissimo Ultra-Thin Automatique is a serious timepiece that can easily hold its own against some very fierce competition. The case is made of titanium, further accentuating its very delicate nature. Its utilitarian look is offset really well with its industrial feel. It’s very no-nonsense.

The expansive dial leaves litte to the imagination. Big art-deco hour numerals, thin hour markers, skeletonised hour and minute hands, and an off-centre small-seconds register round off an aesthetic package that appeals to me immensely so. The light-grey dial is complimented by the black hour numerals and hands, which is further highlighted by the smoother look of the titanium case and bracelet. While some may lay claim to the Octo Finissimo Ultra-Thin Automatique’s monochromatic colour palette as being boring, there is enough differentiation to keep the piece both interesting and of course desirable. I absolutely love the different play between the shades of grey used, and I really think it works well with the piece’s overall directive of being super-thin and super-modern.

The Octo Finissimo Ultra-Thin Automatique is powered by Bulgari’s in-house caliber BVL 138. If you thought that the watch’s dimensions were thin, then the BVL 138’s will really surprise you. It sits at a measly 2.23mm in thickness and 36.6mm in diameter. This is definitely a thin movement, but Bulgari haven’t forgotten about actually usability, ensuring a 60-hour power reserve from the micro-rotor powered movement. The movement is finished impeccably well and is both broad and highly detailed.

Bulgari have made the Octo Finissimo Ultra-Thin Automatique available in not only titanium (with either a full titanium bracelet or a black alligator leather strap), but also in stainless-steel and gold. All three versions are super impressive, and all three carries with them a similar look and feel of a modern ultra-thin piece of haute horlogerie. The Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra-Thin Automatique in titanium has a retail cost of $13,900 on a titanium bracelet, or $12,800 on a leather strap.
